Share of apps that moved, by day

Pale bars were read to a different depth than today and are not comparable in level.

Each bar is one crawl day against the day before it. The scale runs to 100%, so an ordinary day’s wobble looks like a wobble.

What actually moved

The biggest position changes on 18 September, on the same comparison the number above uses.

What this measures, and what it cannot

Shopify's own order, not ours
Every number here comes from the position an app holds on Shopify’s category pages, read once a night. We also hold a category rank computed by ordering apps on review count; it moves when reviews move rather than when the store does, and it is not used on this page.
Only apps seen on both days
An app that appears today and not yesterday has not moved — we simply did not see it. Counting it would turn our own coverage into the market’s turnover.
Capped at the shallower day
We read the first 120 positions of each category page. When two days were read to different depths, the comparison uses the shallower — otherwise a change in our crawl would look like a change in the store.
How much history there is
This series starts 12 September. Today’s verdict compares against 5 earlier days read to the same depth.
